See You on Sunday!

Sunday, December 4th • 10:00 a.m.

Join us for worship at 10:00 am, either in-person or streaming live on Facebook, as we continue our sermon series, From Generation to Generation, as we journey through Advent. On Sunday, the second Sunday of Advent, we will examine From Generation to Generation: God Meets Us in Our Fears.

When the angel Gabriel comes to Mary, she is perplexed and confused—and no doubt, afraid. And yet, the angel’s news is: “Do not be afraid.” Do not be afraid. We hear this refrain all throughout the Christmas story and remember it is the most common phrase in all the bible. What this helps us remember is God shows up in the midst of our fear and uncertainty and confusion. All Generations before us have felt that same fear, and yet have also found was to say, “yes” to God even in the midst of their fear. What are our fears in what God asks of us in our life and how can we, too, say “yes” to God?

Our Money Story: Generosity Reflection

Over the last few weeks, members of our Shawnee Community family have shared their generosity story. This week’s reflection is from Kristie Welder. Thank you for sharing with us.

I want to focus on the true meaning of Christmas…but sometimes what I really want is a new me-size Snuggie.

It’s so easy to overspend on stuff, mostly on stuff we don’t need, this time of year. I get swept up in the deals, the commercials, the delight in my children’s faces. It’s such a high to transform whatever negative emotion, or just boredom, that I might be feeling into the thrill of a new toy, or dress, or face cream. The deep longing that we all have for peace and fulfillment remains, but this is the prime time of the year to pretend that buying more stuff is actually buying us serenity.

It’s easy to condemn our capitalistic, materialistic culture. It’s hard to fight it.

It’s easy to be generous toward my loved ones and with myself. It’s hard to be generous toward the church.

There are ways to make it easier. Especially, for me, by making a plan. This is a wonderful time to fill out the church’s pledge form and set up automatic donations directly from a bank account. It’s a great opportunity to prayerfully, deliberately focus on giving. And pledges are hugely helpful to the church in order to plan next year’s budget.

Happy Holidays everyone,

I have missed you all tremendously, thank you for allowing me a wonderful Sabbatical. The season has definitely caught me by storm but I don’t want us to not have a chance to celebrate in song as a choir. If you have interest in singing and can show up to all rehearsals or at least two rehearsals, please come out and join our Christmas Choir. The choir performance will be Sunday, December 18th at 10:00 a.m.

Join Us on Sunday

Sunday, November 27th • 10:00 a.m.

Join us for worship at 10:00 am, either in-person or streaming live on Facebook, as we begin our new sermon series, From Generation to Generation, as we journey through Advent. On Sunday, the first Sunday of Advent, we will examine From Generation to Generation: There’s Room for Every Story.

We are all the culmination of all the generations of those before us. Known and unknown to us, all have contributed to the story of who we are now. In that long list of names there are stories to tell, expected and unexpected, and God has worked through each one, up to the very present. Those revelations can bring both triumph and trauma, but when we zoom out we can see how each story is woven together through time into the larger tapestry of who we are.

What is your story and how can you see that God is present and active in it?

Our Money Story: Generosity Reflection

Over the next several weeks, members of our Shawnee Community family will be sharing their generosity story. This week’s reflection is from Jamie Mast. Thank you for sharing with us.

I grew up in the small community of Belleville, KS, located in Republic County, in the North Central part of the state, about an hour north of Salina.  This county is filled with incredibly hard-working people, a lot of farmers, and not always a lot of money.  Even though resources can be scarce in small towns like Belleville, time and time again, I’ve seen the community come together to help a member in need.  So when I think about what generosity means to me and why I give, I absolutely must mention the community who taught me.

When a member of the Republic County community is faced with an awful situation, people pitch in to give what they can through money, time, services, and food.  From donating money for travel expenses to a family consumed with treatments for a sick child, to jumping in to help harvest another farmer’s field when illness strikes, I’ve seen examples of caring and generosity in Republic County over and over throughout my life.

I’m trying to live as I was taught by my first community, and so I give to help support the communities that I’m a part of now- to help sustain and grow them.  There have been times when people have generously supported me, and I want to reciprocate that to show my gratitude and love for them.  So I also give to show love, caring, and gratitude towards members of my communities- church, school, work, friend groups, etc.

Shawnee Community Christian Church has certainly become one of the most treasured communities in my life, and one I want to show my love, caring, and gratitude towards through time, talents, and resources.
