Tall Oaks Update

On Monday, September 26th the Regional Board met to discuss and vote on the future of Tall Oaks. The Regional Board approved a motion to postpone further action on the original motion from the Executive Committee of the Regional Board to sell Tall Oaks in 2023 until such time as a group of stakeholders can be formed to explore more concrete options for the future of Tall Oaks. Additionally, the Board approved a motion to form a steering committee with stakeholders to begin that work. You can read more about the meeting here.

Join Us on Sunday for Worship

Sunday, September 25th • 10:00 am

Join us at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 25th in person or streaming live on Facebook, as we continue our sermon series, Re:Boot. On Sunday, we will examine RE:Think Happiness (1 Timothy 6:6-12).

Advertising is a powerful tool that is designed specifically to tap into our needs and wants and get us to always want more. If we’re not aware of what we’re doing, we can constantly be running to get more of what we already have, what our friends have, what our neighbors have. If we’re not careful we can put ourselves in a race that ends nowhere.

Instead, what if we sought contentment? Contentment can help bring us peace with who we are and with what we have, the peace we’re so often desperately seeking while we chase after more. What does that kind of contentment and peace look like and feel like to you?

Story Time at Shawnee Community

Monday, September 26th • 9:45-10:30 am

Each Monday from 9:45-10:30 am, Katie Sampel will host story & play time for kids preschool and younger and their caregivers. This is a great opportunity for little ones to foster a love of reading. Children will have an opportunity to play together and enjoy a fun, interactive story. Caregivers will have time to connect and build relationships with others who are in the same stage of life. Questions? Contact Katie at childrensministry@shawneecommunity.org.

See You on Sunday for Worship!

Sunday, September 18 • 10:00 am

Join us at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 18th in person or streaming live on Facebook, as we continue our sermon series, Re:Boot. On Sunday, we will examine Re:Frame Prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-7).

Prayer is a spiritual practice that we know we ought to be doing, but many times we’re unsure of how and why we should pray. And, if we’re honest, it can be hard to pray. In 1st Timothy we learn that we ought to pray…for everyone. Really…everyone? What about people we don’t like, people who are our enemies, people we don’t even know?

Prayer is an essential part of our faith, but not because it necessarily changes others. It’s essential because it changes us. Prayer is a realignment of our heart to be more like Jesus, even when it’s hard to do.

Tall Oaks News

Recently, the region held five listening sessions to discuss five proposed plans about the future of Tall Oaks. You can find more detailed information about those plans at www.kcdisciples.org/todr. At the end of each listening session, attendees ranked the proposed plans in order of preference. The majority of people in attendance voted for plan 3, the pilot. While the least amount of people voted for options 1 and 5, both of which involved selling the camp.

After these listening sessions, the Executive Committee for the Regional Board put forward a recommendation and motion to sell Tall Oaks through a video. That video can be viewed here www.youtube.com/watch?v=APYRJsgiaeQ.

Tall Oaks is owned by the region, meaning every member of Disciples of Christ of Greater KC is an owner of this campground. For over 50 years, children, youth and adults have attended camps, conferences and retreats at Tall Oaks.

There is a final vote on this motion by the entire regional board on September 26th at 6:30pm at Merriam Christian Church (9401 Johnson Drive, Merriam KS 66203). People are encouraged to attend, wear a Tall Oaks Camp shirt, write a letter to share their experience and love for Tall Oaks, and to show support for the camp we all love.

Other ways that you can help are:

• Pledging money to Tall Oaks for the deferred maintenance at https://forms.gle/9cW8XihYxuYdhEzK7

• Registering for camp in 2023 at www.kcdisciplescamps.org/registration. Camps will happen no matter the outcome of the vote (and early registration is a great way to show the board the importance of Tall Oaks). There is also going to be the first ever Adult Camp this summer for anyone who has completed their first year of college or older.

• Spreading the word that the future of  Tall Oaks is uncertain with your fellow Disciples of Christ members and any past or current campers.

• Lastly, there are people committed to do the work (see the third option which received a majority of the votes during the listening sessions) necessary to make Tall Oaks Camp and Conference Center successful.

Media Volunteers Needed

We need at least 4 volunteers to help out on Sundays on our Media Team. We are down a few volunteers due to moving and retirement. Volunteers will receive training to assist with running sound, media slides, worship live stream or running the camera. We invite you to prayerfully consider whether any of these roles are a good fit for you and a way for you to serve your faith community. If you are interested or want to learn more, please email communications@shawneecommunity.org.
