Join Us for Worship on Sunday

Sunday, March 13 • 10:00 a.m.

Join us for worship on Sunday, March 13th at 10:00 a.m. in person or streaming live on Facebook, as we continue our Lenten sermon series, Short Stories by Jesus. On Sunday, we will examine Short Stories by Jesus: The Good Samaritan.

We usually have preconceived ideas about the people around us, and these ideas can often influence how we treat people. If, indeed, we are to love our neighbor and our enemies, what does that look like in today’s world? How does Jesus continue to challenge your understanding of what neighbors and enemies look like?

We can’t wait to worship with you!

Bible Study Moment – Psalm 137

Over a year ago when I was to be elder at Sunday worship service, including giving the call to worship I considered using Psalm 137 as a call to worship. There had been depressing news regarding Covid-19 and I felt down, and my sense was that many in the church might be feeling the same way. Psalm 137 is a psalm of lament, the main one I know. And verses 2 & 3 resonate with me – Sing us a song of Zion. How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?

I felt obligated in my own mind to use the entire psalm. It is only 9 verses. But verse 9 was a problem – A blessing on the one who seizes your children and smashes them against the rock. So I used a different call to worship.

Shortly afterwards I read Reading While Black by Esau McCaulley. There is a chapter about Psalm 137. He explained how the black church sees the Bible as a dialogue between God and the people seeking to know God. And how a people who have been forcefully removed from their homeland could feel like the martyrs in Revelation 6 who cry out, “How long before you require justice for our blood?” and envision that justice being something like heads being smashed against the rock.

Lenten Book Study Begins Sunday

Sundays 5-6:00 p.m. • March 6-April 10

Our Lenten Book Study begins Sunday, March 6th from 5-6:00 p.m. either in person at the church or through Zoom. We will read through the book, Short Stories By Jesus. Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus’ stories ignore this disparity and have often allowed anti-Semitism and misogyny to color their perspectives.

In this Bible study based on her Short Stories by Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine analyzes these “problems with parables” taking readers back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them. With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us—and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later.
