On Sunday, May 3, we appointed a subcommittee who will continue to monitor guidance from the General Church of the Disciples of Christ, with the advisement of the Kansas City Region of Disciples, the research for church reopening being done by the National Council of Churches (via the Wisconsin Council), the Ad Astra phasing plan of the state of Kansas, the CDC, and information from Johnson County Department of Health and Environment as we progress through the summer. The subcomittee will seek to use all resources available to advise the board of a plan for reopening when it is appropriate.
We have tasked that subcommittee, made up of Linda Phillips (Facilities Coordinator), Jeanie Botkin (Vice Moderator), Susan Hale (a church member and local Physician’s Assistant), and Rev. Johnny Lewis, with two primary goals as they consider a timeline for returning to public worship.
1- Using data that is informed by good science and the recommendations of the scientific community, we will return to public worship when we are reasonably confident that we can do so while keeping worshipers, volunteers, and staff safe from spreading or contracting the virus.
2- Using these resources we will return to public worship when we are reasonably confident that we can provide a public worship experience that is meaningful and consistent with who we are as Disciples. Signs of this would include safety and inclusion of children, senior adults, and worshipers with compromised immune systems. A plan for some form of communion (though our previous model will likely change). The hope of returning to some form of congregational music.
