Mission Opportunity: Serve at Micah Ministry

On Monday, October 2 we will be serving dinner at Micah Ministry as a church family. Volunteers should meet at Micah at 4:45 p.m. to help set up and prepare for the guests. Volunteers must be 12 years and older. If you are interested in volunteering, email Tabatha.

Micah Ministry is located at Independence Boulevard Christian Church (606 Gladstone Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64124). From 5:30p-7:00p every Monday, Micah offers a hot “to-go” meal, hygiene products, clothing, additional food items, and items to support our house-less neighbors such as blankets, sleeping bags, tents, etc.

Building Projects Update

Over the summer we expected two building projects, the first for the sanctuary double doors to swing out due to the fire code and bathroom upgrades to make them more inclusive and secure. Unfortunately, the contractor lined up to do the two projects was not able to do them at this time. We will still complete them but we do not have a schedule yet.

Additionally, the building lessor is working on repairing a leak on the outside of the building that has caused water in the building. This is why there is a hole above the door that goes outside in the worship space.

New Sermon Series Begins Sunday!

Sunday, September 3 • 10:00 a.m.

Join us on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in person or streaming live on Facebook, as we begin our new sermon series, Come to the Table. On Sunday, we will discuss Come to the Table: Hospitality. Jesus’ lesson at the last supper was clear: the meal of the kin-dom of God is for ALL. Friends, strangers and enemies, saints and sinners, joyful and grieving…

We’re reminded and invited to do as Jesus did by not being “overcome with evil but overcoming evil with good.” It’s a real challenge which requires that we follow God’s way in offering a good meal at God’s table for all of God’s guests. How can you invite others to this table of Hospitality?

You are invited to “Come to the Table.”

Sermon Series: At the Movies

Bible Study Moment

Matthew & Mark record Jesus’ message at the beginning of his ministry in similar ways. Mark records Jesus saying, “The kingdom of God comes near. Repent, and believe the good news!” While Matthew has “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Both are from NIV.)

In a class I took in college, the Lutheran minister who was teaching the class said that Matthew probably didn’t use “kingdom of God” because he had a Jewish audience in mind who might take offense at “kingdom of God” so he changed it to “kingdom of heaven”.

Maybe Matthew’s original readers and hearers understood what he meant but sometime over 2000 years many people have understood “kingdom of heaven” as more of a prediction that the world is ending and judgement day is coming. (Repent! The end is near!) One biblical scholar shared in the forward of a book of his that I read that he understood Jesus was an apocalyptic preacher (the world is ending); and that since the world is still here almost 2000 years later, that that proved to him that Jesus was wrong, and so he “lost his faith”.

Another way of thinking of the kingdom of God or heaven coming is that we will relate to God in a different way. And that did happen due to Jesus ministry, death, and resurrection; establishing the church. There is also the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the Jews losing their homeland about 40 years later that would have been seen by them as the end of the world.

See you Sunday!

At The Movies

A great movie does more than entertain us, it helps us connect with our feelings and think about the world we live in. Faith is not separate from the world we live in, but intimately connects us to our world. Our next sermon series helps us use movies we love to explore our faith and how we live.

August 6th we’ll take a look at True Grit (2010) and ask what justice, retribution, and forgiveness mean while examining Romans 12:1-2, 17-21.
