Tim is part of Open Table Christian Church in the Nashville area. It is a small church without a paid minister, so different members take turns preaching. This past week Tim gave the message on Matthew 13:24-30 and 13:36-43, the parable of the wheat and weeds, and Jesus explaining the parable to the disciples.
Tim said that he has learned that there is a plant that so closely resembles the wheat plant that people were known to sabotage a rival’s field with this weed. So verse 28, “An enemy has done this” is actually something that sounded normal to the original audience.
Tim also pointed out what Jesus says in the explanation; angels are the workers in the field, we are the wheat (verse 38). And then, that is a stretch to think that a wheat plant can tell if the plants around it are real wheat plants, or this weed. Yet if we look at church history, going back to at least 1 Corinthians 1, that is exactly what many Christians have done, trying to weed out the non-believers, leading to divisions in this “body of Christ” that Jesus prayed would be one even as he and God the Father are one.

Rev. Julianna Whitson(she/her/hers) is a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) minister located in Kansas City where she serves as a pediatric hospital chaplain, working with Hematology/Oncology patients. She found her faith and her call to ministry at summer camp, where God’s presence created a space for refuge, peace, excitement, and spiritual liberation. She lives out her call by welcoming the whole stranger, lovingly and courageously, as they navigate their way through crisis, chaos, curiosity, and celebration. Julianna enjoys spending time with her wife, Alice (and their cat), and exploring Kansas City.

Rev. Lisa Setty works as a chaplain for Ascend Hospice here in the Kansas City area. She and her husband live in Overland Park and have three children with the youngest leaving for college next month. Fun fact: Lisa is active in the animal rescue world and has fostered hundreds of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens over the past 7 years. She’s currently fostering a cat and her 6 three week old kittens.
A Celebration of Life for Chris Galey, Bruce & Penny Wagner’s son, will be Thursday, July 13 at Wyandotte Park Shelter House D at 5:00 p.m. Penny and Bruce are providing burgers, brats and hot dogs and the church will be providing sides and desserts for the Celebration of Life. Set up is from 4:45-5:00 p.m. so all items will need to be at the park by that time.

For some of us it’s fun and joyful. For others of us, it’s uncomfortable or even painful. We ALL have dysfunction in our families-stories we’d rather not tell. It’s no different for those families in the Bible. Yet God still manages to work through and with those messy people just as God manages to work through and with messy us. And through it all, then and now, God still manages to bring hope into our lives and our family relationships.
