When You’re Running on Empty: Finding Grace in a Holy “No” | Shawnee Community Christian Church

September 20, 2026/in News, Podcast, Sermon Video/by SCAdmin

Have you ever found yourself nodding along to a request, saying “yes” out loud while feeling your energy drain away before the word even finishes leaving your mouth?

We say yes because we care about the people around us. We say yes out of obligation, habit, guilt, or fear of missing out. We say yes because we want to be nice and keep the peace. But eventually, one yes becomes ten, twenty, or fifty, and we wake up wondering why we feel so soul-weary and spent.

In Mark 6:30-46, we see the disciples returning from a demanding ministry trip, exhausted and grieving the death of John the Baptist. Jesus sees their weariness and invites them to “come away to a deserted place all by yourself and rest a while.” Even when the crowd follows them—hungry for healing and teaching—Jesus cares for them with compassion, but he doesn’t abandon his own limits. After feeding them, he bids them farewell, sends the crowd home, and climbs the mountain to pray.

Living in the “messy middle” of real life means recognizing that our energy and time are finite. Jesus showed us that setting healthy boundaries isn’t selfish—it’s a way to protect what matters most. When we learn to offer a graceful “no” to the overwhelming demands of the daily routine, we open up space to say “yes” to spiritual renewal, quiet rest, and real connection.
