Weary from the Grind? You Don’t Have to Earn Your Place at the Table | Shawnee Community Christian Church

September 13, 2026/in News, Podcast, Sermon Video/by SCAdmin

We’ve all been there—running into an old friend at the grocery store, sighing heavily, and exchanging the modern badge of honor: “Oh, you know me… just busy, busy, busy.”

For so many of us, busyness has become more than just a schedule; it’s become our identity. Deep down, we worry that if we stop moving, performing, or producing, we’ll lose our value. We drag ourselves around by our calendars, running on empty while carrying the invisible weight of our daily responsibilities.

In Luke 10:38–42, we meet Martha, who was completely overwhelmed by the social and emotional labor of serving her guests. When she snaps at her sister Mary for sitting at Jesus’s feet instead of helping, Jesus responds not with scolding, but with profound tenderness: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things…”

Jesus wasn’t telling Martha her work didn’t matter. He was offering her a way out of the trap—reminding her that she didn’t need to wear herself out to prove her worth. She already had a seat at the table.

In the thick of real life, we are constantly invited to make a choice. Will we let the current of productivity drag us along, or will we push back? We can choose to practice an unhurried presence, quiet our internal task lists, and grant our loved ones the rare gift of being truly seen.
