Trading the Hustle for Grace: Finding Rest When You’re Exhausted | Shawnee Community Christian Church

September 6, 2026/in News, Podcast, Sermon Video/by SCAdmin

We often act like ducks gliding effortlessly across a glasslike pond, looking completely composed to everyone passing by. But underneath the water, our feet are paddling as fast as they can just to keep from sinking. We live in a culture that sells us the lie that our worth equals our work and that we only matter if we stay busy, productive, and successful.

A Paraphrase of Matthew 11:28-30 “Are you worn out? Are you carrying heavy loads trying to prove you’re enough? Come stand next to me. Walk with me and learn how I live. I won’t lay heavy rules or impossible expectations on you. Partner with me, and you’ll find true rest for your soul.”

We carry heavy burdens—feeling like we have to earn the right to rest, hiding our anxieties because we think we need to look put-together, or worrying we’ll never measure up. The truth is, we are all a bit of a mess, and that is okay. Jesus doesn’t ask us to build a better time-management system or fake it until we make it.

In ancient times, a younger ox was yoked alongside an older, experienced one who carried the heavy weight and set a manageable pace. Jesus offers to carry that heavy load for us. We can trade our heaviness for grace by stopping our efforts to earn rest, slowing our daily pace, and moving away from performance-based living.
