When Faith Meets Mental Health: Finding Grace When You’re Not Okay | Shawnee Community Christian Church
It is entirely possible to go to work, answer every text, care for your family, smile at church, and still be barely holding things together on the inside. When faith is central to our lives, a heavy season of anxiety or depression can bring an added layer of quiet guilt: Why do I still feel this way when I’ve been praying? Why can’t I just be grateful? When we stack spiritual shame on top of emotional pain, we lose sight of what grace actually offers.
In Psalm 88, scripture presents one of its most honest and unpolished prayers. Unlike most psalms of lament, which resolve with a comforting declaration that everything will turn out fine, Psalm 88 offers no neat resolution or sudden happy ending. It ends in darkness. Yet ancient editors did not remove it to protect the mood—they kept it in our Bible. This tells us that faith has room for unresolved sorrow, unanswered questions, and the person whose treatment hasn’t worked yet.
We often try to rush each other out of hard feelings because another person’s pain makes us uncomfortable. We offer quick clichés like “everything happens for a reason” or “just give it to God.” But true grace does not require us to manufacture a forced happy ending. Therapy and prayer are not enemies. Science and spirituality do not compete. When someone breaks a leg, we do not ask if they tried trusting God before going to the emergency room. In the same way, medical care, therapy, support groups, and medication are concrete ways grace reaches us.
This week, give yourself permission to step off the timeline of expected recovery. Refuse to put a deadline on your healing. Remember that boundaries are not selfishness, rest is not laziness, and asking for help is not weakness. Making that phone call, walking into a counselor’s office, or taking prescribed treatment can be a profound act of faith and self-care.
