Let’s share a dirty little secret that doesn’t get said out loud very often: pastors, ministers, and long-time believers get weary and experience doubt. We have days where faith feels like wishful thinking, where we pray and wonder if we are just talking to the ceiling, or where the heavy seasons of life make us question how things ended up this way. When we pretend to have it all together, we do each other a disservice. Faith isn’t an unshakable shield that protects us from human emotion—it’s an invitation to bring our honest, unpolished selves to the table.

Don’t let your mind be pulled apart into pieces by worry. Instead, bring every part of your life—your struggles, your heavy heart, and your quiet gratitude—into open conversation with God. When you do, the comforting presence of God, which goes far deeper than anything our human brains can fully comprehend, will stand guard over your heart and mind.

So often, passages like Philippians 4 are weaponized as “self-help Christianity” or a “tyranny of prescriptive joy”—as if feeling anxious means your faith is inadequate. But Paul didn’t write these words from a sunlit vacation; he wrote them while incarcerated under a capital charge. The Greek word he uses for anxiety, merimnao, means to be “divided into parts”—much like Martha busying herself while Mary sat in quiet presence.

Prayer isn’t a transaction where we attempt to influence God or manifest a magic fix for our problems. It’s an end in itself. Just like a true friend who sits with you in the middle of a sorrow that cannot be instantly fixed, prayer anchors us to a presence bigger than ourselves. It is the practice of radical acceptance: surrendering what we cannot control so we can hear the quiet voice that reminds us we are unconditionally beloved.
