Volunteer Spotlight

Jenn and Brian Doefler, with their two sons Ben (4 years) and Jake (2 years), have been members of Shawnee Community for 6 years. Jenn has served on the Children’s Ministry committee and in Sunday school. Brian serves on the church board and helps out in the sound booth on Sunday morning. The family loves visiting local parks together on weekends. When Jenn is not working as a speech-language pathologist for the KCK school district she enjoys reading in her spare time. Jenn loves serving on Sunday mornings because it gives her the opportunity to get to know people in our church family. Thanks Doefler family for being such a committed part of our church family!

See You Sunday!

Sunday, February 27 • 10:00 a.m.

Join us Sunday, February 27th at 10:00 a.m., in person or streaming live on Facebook, as we finish our sermon series, The Art of Hearing. On Sunday, we will explore The Art of Hearing: Hearing is Believing.

There are times in our lives when our faith grows because of something specific and meaningful we experience. We often think those experiences have to be exceptional and dazzling, but really anything has the potential to help us experience God in ways that have a profound impact on us. Whether we have an experience that is once in a lifetime or in the midst of everydayness, it does and should change us. Following Jesus is asking for change in our lives, in our hearts and in our minds.

How has following Jesus changed your life? How would you like it to change your life?

An Update from the Health & Safety Committee

The Health and Safety committee has reviewed COVID numbers in our area.  A month ago the infection rate was more than 1,000 new cases/100,000 people in Johnson County. As of February 20th, the rate has dropped to 150 new cases/100,000 people and is expected to continue this trend. If cases start rising again, we will reevaluate.

Masks: Starting Sunday, February 27th, masks will be optional on Sunday and during other church activities or meetings.

Communion: We will continue to offer the individual prepackaged communion but we will also add the option of individual juice and bread in cups at the communion table.

Coffee bar: The coffee/tea/hot chocolate bar in the back of the worship space is open. We need volunteers to help set up before church or clean up after. Please contact Ashley Follett at communications@shawneecommunity.org if you would like to volunteer.

Thanks to all for their patience and acceptance of guidance for the safety of our community throughout this pandemic.

Ash Wednesday Service

Wednesday, March 2 • 6:00 p.m.

Lenten Book Study Begins March 6th

Sundays 5-6:00 p.m. • March 6-April 10

Our Lenten Book Study begins Sunday, March 6th from 5-6:00 p.m. either in person at the church or through Zoom. We will read through the book, Short Stories By Jesus. Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus’ stories ignore this disparity and have often allowed anti-Semitism and misogyny to color their perspectives.

In this Bible study based on her Short Stories by Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine analyzes these “problems with parables” taking readers back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them. With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us—and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later.

Join us Sunday, February 20th at 10:00 a.m. in person or streaming live on Facebook, as we finish our sermon series, The Art of Hearing. On Sunday, we will explore The Art of Hearing: Hearing One Another

Each of us has a voice. Not just a literal, physical voice, but a voice that shares who we are and how we got here—a voice that shares our story. Embedded in each one of our stories are situations where we can choose love or hate, to accept or deny another’s humanity and child-of-God-ness. How we use our voice reflects the love we see for ourselves and others through God’s eyes. Sometimes it can be incredibly difficult to hear and see that love, especially when it is one we consider an “enemy.” And yet, Jesus teaches us to love our enemies as well as our friends.

How do you hear God’s voice calling you to love and how is that reflected in your voice today?
